This year, Harris & Harris employees teamed up to send 25 care packages to U.S. Troops overseas. From toothpaste to cookies, each package included at least 36 different items that soldiers requested. Harris & Harris divided their 300+ employees into 9 teams and assigned team leads. The response was overwhelming and every employee was immediately motivated to participate and donate. The initiative was based out of the Chicago office, yet employees around country sent in donations.
The donation program was set up through a non-profit organization called Any Soldier. Their website (AnySoldier.com) services the soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen and coast guardsmen stationed throughout the world. Soldiers register on the website, post requests for items, and generous individuals and companies reply to these requests. Marty Horn, raised in the Chicago suburbs, started the website in 2003 when his son, Sergeant Brian Horn, was stationed in Iraq. By 2008, the website had attracted over 35,000 volunteers and served over one million troops.
Harris & Harris was honored to participate in this program. After investigating on how they could better support American troops overseas, they chose Any Soldier as the perfect outlet to help. “Even though they are stationed across the globe, it is so easy to help those serving our country. They need just the simplest items, and as citizens it is our duty to take the time and the money to pay them back for their hard work,” says Arnie Harris, President and CEO of Harris & Harris. “It was so amazing to see how the employees here joined forces to help those who really deserve it.” Harris & Harris plans on participating in programs like this every year.
